COURSE OVERVIEW:

The primary role of facility managers is to manage/oversee an operating facility. To do this, facility managers must have a working knowledge of building systems, structure, interiors and exteriors and grounds so that the facility and all of its required systems function efficiently, reliably, safely, securely and in a manner consistent with existing regulations and standards. Effective operation and maintenance of facilities is a complex responsibility in today's environment.

Ready, Set, Exercise! 
How to Develop and Conduct a Business Continuity Plan Test
Speaker: Diane Coles-Levine, MCR


About the Presentation:

Successful crisis management and disaster recovery takes more than a plan: it requires realistic testing and validation. How do you do that properly? Are your exercises smoke and mirrors or do they provide as-close-to-real situations as possible? How does your program compare? How can you improve? During this hands-on workshop, you will learn how to set up and conduct a successful Business Continuity Plan exercise. Through a mock exercise of an actual event as the case study, you will participate in response and recovery activities. We will use some surprise participants and provide timely insertions to add realism to the situation – as the event would actually occur.  Join us to learn from some experienced professionals in our industry – as well as your peers – and have fun doing it!

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn how to avoid common pitfalls during the development process and how to anticipate and resolve potential problems
  2. Learn how to make drills and exercises realistic and uncover gaps in your plan
  3. Learn exercise conduct, evaluation, and critiquing strategies
  4. Learn how to structure an exercise in line with the BCP maturity of your organization

Diane Coles Levine Bio:
President of Workplace Management Solutions, Diane Coles Levine specializes in business resilience planning and facility management consulting. She is a guest lecturer in business continuity planning at MIT Professional Education and Vienna University of Technology, Austria. Diane is the co-editor and co-author of the international award-winning books "Work on the Move” and “Work on the Move 2” and co-author of “Cut it Out: Save for Today, Build for Tomorrow.” Diane is a contributing author to Facility Management Journal (FMJ) and won the editors pics award for her article titled “Workplace Violence: Finding and Fixing the Gaps in your program.”  Her work is mentioned in Business Week, Fiscal Times, and Return on Performance Magazine. She won the IFMA George Graves Facility Management Achievement. Award, the CoreNet REmmy for “Workplace Innovation” and was named a Southern California Real Estate Journal “Woman of Influence.” Diane is a member of IFMA Board of Directors and Past Chair of the IFMA Foundation.  Diane is a member of the City of Long Beach CERT.  She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business and Management, a certification in Crisis Management and Business Continuity Planning from MIT, and Masters in Corporate Real Estate (MCR) designation.

  • Managing Sustainable Facilities:  This focus area looks in depth at the process of aligning a facility's sustainable plan with an organization's vision, strategic goals and policies.  Learn strategies in an SFP's business case for sustainability within your organization, and provide the details behind the plans to prepare for, lead and implement those changes.
  • Operating Sustainable Facilities:  This focus area looks at ways in which SFP's can operate their facilities in a more sustainable manner through changes in buidling equipment and technology as well as changes in operations and maintenance procedures.  This focus area is organized around the eight major categories of sustainable facility management.

The IFMA FM Learning System™ is a premier quality review course designed to meet the needs of professionals and organizations. It is developed based on input and guidance from a wide spectrum of facility management subject-matter experts and leaders. This coursewill provide you with the tools necessary to learn the updated FM body of knowledge as well as help you prepare for the CFM Exam with emphasis on the competencies of Real Estate, Finance and Business, and Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability.

The IFMA FM Learning System (FMLS) is a preferred source for CFM Exam preparation. In addition to preparing professionals for the CFM Exam, the Learning System is an excellent professional development tool and an indispensable on-the-job resource.

The IFMA Facility Management Learning System™ is a certification preparation program and is not a substitute for the CFM certification examination. Completing this program does not entitle the users to present themselves as CFMs, or to use the CFM designation. The only way to earn the Certified Facility Manager certification is to apply for and pass the CFM Exam. If you wish to take the CFM Exam, you must submit an application form and separate exam fee through IFMA.

CFM Review: The Certified Facility Manager® (CFM) credential sets the industry standard for ensuring the knowledge and competence of practicing facility managers as the most respected global credential in facility management. The CFM Exam is competency-based, testing what a person can do compared to standards that define the practice of facility management. In addition, the CFM is the only global facility management certification available.

IFMA’s certification process is designed to assess competency in the field through work experience, education and the ability to pass a comprehensive exam that covers 11 competencies that make up the facility management body of knowledge. This course will discuss the intricacies of taking the exam and is not to be considered a review of exam material.
